Rest in Peace - Joseph Cardinal Bernardin - 1928 to 1996

In my daily devotional book Give Us This Day, I was reminded that today - November 14 - is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, the great Archbishop of Chicago who was beloved by so many people.  Cardinal Bernardin was a bridge builder and a peacemaker, a leader in the Church who was not afraid to speak the truth, but also a leader who could bring people together.  In a world so torn by dissension, arguments, and strife, we need someone like Cardinal Bernardin today.  Many of our leaders seek to divide people and to create chaos and turmoil.  While one of our national leaders today asks people to seek revenge against those who do not agree with them, Cardinal Bernardin would be gathering people together with grace and dignity.  We remember him today.  May he rest in peace.  Boy, do we miss him.

Quote: “The building up of peace in the world… is the responsibility of everyone. We all have different roles, perhaps, but all of us are responsible for creating the kind of climate that is conducive to peace.”
