Scenes from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela -

It has been over a week now since we have been back from our pilgrimage to Spain, walking the Way of St James.  The Cathedral was absolutely beautiful.  We were not able to take photos of the statue of St James behind the sanctuary and the altar.  However, I tried to capture the essence of the cathedral in these photos.

The plaque that was placed when the current cathedral was original built in the 12th century.

The magnificent doors at the entrance of the cathedral -

A statue of Mary of Salome, the mother of James the Lesser (who is a different person than James the Greater).  This statue is right near the sanctuary.

A view from the side leading up to the sanctuary and altar.  There are many small chapels leading off this passageway.

A photo of the tree of Jesse pilar that stood at the original entrance of the cathedral, but it is now located in the foyer.  The movie The Way with Martin Sheen showed the pilgrims touching this pilar, which was the custom for centuries.  However, there are literally holes and groves in the marble of this pilar from the millions and millions of pilgrims who have touched it for all of those centuries since it was carved in the 12th century.  However, now it is roped off and the pilgrims cannot touch it.  Claudia Addison is shown next to this pilar.
